Since November 2004 Norville Opticians has been using the Orthoscopics system developed by Ian Jordan to help people with perceptual problems. You may have seen the BBC programme "My Family and Autism" a few years ago where Orthoscopics was demonstrated with astounding results.
Orthoscopics is the use of tinted lenses to help relieve the symptoms caused by conditions such as dyslexia, dyspraxia and autism to name but a few. The Orthoscopic System consists of computerised assessment and prescribing instruments. Different coloured lights are used to find the person's optimum colour response. The coloured light is then transposed into a tint on spectacle lenses taking the room illumination into account. The correct colour can then stabilise the person's system and relieve the symptoms of Perceptual Problems.
As you are probably already aware, Perceptual Problems is the name given to a group of symptoms caused by malfunctions in the eye/brain communication chain. It is estimated that up to 10% of children may suffer from this disorder to varying degrees. A person with problems such as dyslexia may experience a range of symptoms from reading problems through to major perceptual difficulties. They will often underachieve in academic work or in social environments, self esteem is lowered, anti-social behaviour is common and the sufferer can even exhibit neurological symptoms. Symptoms are often unrecognised, even in a "normal" eye test and are common in the classroom.
